#HERstory Feature: Lillie Mae from Atlanta, GA

Interviewed by: Kierra Si’Mone

Tell us your story?

I grew up in a very underserved community in Winston-Salem NC, and it was so bad that we would hear gunshots outside of our window on a nightly basis.  As a child I saw people fight a lot, shoot at each other, sell drugs… you name it! However I always felt that ‘now is not my forever’ and maintained a keen focus on schoolwork.  After high-school, I entered UNC Chapel Hill, graduated, relocated to Atlanta and eventually built a business to help entrepreneurs bring their visions into reality!  Through www.GlamBoss.org, I create resources, events and opportunities for women to discover their purpose and turn it into profit. I’ve since been featured on Black Enterprise, Uptown Magazine, TMZ, Huffington Post, XoNecole, Kontrol Magazine, Sheen Magazine and more.  I’ve awarded business grants to emerging entrepreneurs and I also use my platform to support local nonprofit organizations like Mary Hall Freedom House, Charge Up Campaign and the Boys and Girls Club

What achievement or contribution are you most proud of? *

I’m most proud of being a full-time entrepreneur for most of the past decade.  It takes a lot of faith and sacrifice to work for yourself.

Who or what inspires you? *

My mother is my ultimate inspiration! She worked two jobs for most of my life, but always made time to cook our meals, support my academic efforts, build my confidence and provide a consistent spiritual foundation for my sister and I.

What does HerStory mean to you? *

HerStory is a reminder that everyone has a unique journey which can be used to inspire others.  No path is perfect, but the process leads to the promise!
